What is Vimshottari Dasha?

If you have ever opened a Vedic astrology app and felt overwhelmed by jargon, dasha is usually where the confusion starts. Here is what it actually means — and why Antara is built around it.

The short answer

Dasha (दशा) means a planetary period. In the Vimshottari system — the most widely used in India — nine grahas take turns ruling stretches of your life across a 120-year cycle. Your birth Moon's nakshatra sets where the sequence begins.

When astrologers say you are "in Saturn dasha" or "Jupiter antardasha," they mean that planet's period is colouring your experiences right now. Not as a pop-up notification. As a season.

Mahadasha and antardasha

The mahadasha is the major period — years long. Inside it, shorter antardasha (sub-period) slices belong to other planets. Think of mahadasha as the chapter and antardasha as the scene.

Why Vimshottari specifically?

Classical Jyotisha uses several dasha systems. Vimshottari won because it maps cleanly onto the 27 nakshatras and the nine grahas (including Rahu and Ketu). It is the system most Indian astrologers default to for life readings.

The periods are fixed lengths: Venus 20 years, Saturn 19, Jupiter 16, and so on down to Ketu at 7. Where you enter the cycle depends entirely on your Moon's position at birth.

How this connects to your chart

Dasha does not replace your natal chart. It activates different parts of it over time. A strong Jupiter in your fifth house might matter enormously during Jupiter dasha and fade into the background during Mars antardasha.

That is why a reading tied to "today" without dasha context is mostly noise. Antara anchors every reading to the period you are actually in.
